Visual Or Verbal Memory… How Do You Remember?

Memories As PicturesWhen you remember something, what is it that you remember?

Do you remember the actual way things looked, like a photograph or video?  Or do you remember a description of what happened, like a journal entry?

Memories form a huge part of who we are.  They are, after all, your history… all of the events that have led you to where you are today (all of the ones that you can consciously remember, at least).

The way that you remember your past has a huge impact on how you act and react to other people and the world in general.  It is often easier to attach emotion to already existing images, whether photographs, a movie, or visual memories, for instance.  At the same time, however, the depth of emotion attached is often greater with images generated from words.

It is easy to come up with examples.  You are far more likely to feel an emotional reaction to a story about a natural disaster when there is a picture or video of the aftermath.  Your connection with a character, or a story in general, however, is likely much greater when you read the book than when you watch the movie.

These are not universally true… the depth of emotion from a picture of your wedding night, or your baby’s first steps, or something similar may be as great or greater than the picture formed from a description of that.  You can also easily attach emotion to a story about a parent who lost their child without needing a picture.

These exceptions do more to show the general truth of the rule than they do to contradict it, however.

The two ways of remembering have an impact on the way we think, as well.  A person with a visual memory is, in general, considerably more likely to be able to deal with small details well.  The person with the verbal memory, on the other hand, likely finds it easier to do a quick analysis of large amounts of information.

Even more than ability, though, the two ways of remembering have a great impact on our preferences.  A person with a verbal memory may have plenty of ability to deal with small details… but is highly unlikely to enjoy it.  A person with a visual memory may be able to analyze large amounts of information, but not want a job that requires them to do so regularly.

Pictures Painted With Words

The two forms of memory are not completely exclusive, either.  A person with a visual memory can still remember words and descriptions, and a person with a verbal memory can still remember pictures, and even more so, generate pictures from the words they remember to describe whatever it is.

Those of you with a visual memory may want to look closer at the second image in this article to better understand… that is a picture formed entirely from letters.  While this is not literally what people with a verbal memory do, it can make the idea a more concrete concept for people who do not remember in words.

The way you tend to remember things is not something that can be changed, though you can explicitly remember specific things in the other manner, if it is important.  I have a verbal memory, but I’ll never forget the way my wife’s eyes looked at our wedding, or the sight of my baby a few days old at home, or a few other of the most important moments in my life.  I’m certain my wife, who has a visual memory, could name a few things that she will never forget, verbally (though she may have a mental image of the words… I’m not entirely certain).

If you were to attempt to constantly remember things in whichever way is not natural to you, however, it would take so much ongoing mental effort that you would basically be unable to function at a normal level.  You would find yourself constantly mentally exhausted.

It is difficult, even when you know that someone thinks and remembers the other way, to truly understand.  It is somewhat like a blind person and a deaf person trying to communicate to each other the things around them.  The deaf person can try to imagine what sound would, well, sound like, and the blind person can try to guess what things would look like, but the concepts are so foreign that they are likely to be wrong more often than right.

That doesn’t mean that they can’t find a way to communicate, though.  It’s just that a large part of the way that one perceives things is missing from the way the other experiences them.  That means that things that are perfectly clear to one person may be confusing or completely misinterpreted by the other.

If you understand that the other person thinks and remembers in a way that is actually foreign to you, it can help you to figure out better ways to communicate with them.  It can help you to better understand and connect with them.  It can even help you to forgive them if you understand that what they did simply didn’t have the same meaning to them that it did to you.

PS – I have not conducted a scientific study, but based on the people I have known, visual memory is more common than verbal memory.  This seems, again from the people that I know, to be even more true for women than for men, though men still seem to more commonly have visual memory than verbal.

All of which makes me curious… which way doyouremember?

Staring At A Blank Wall

Staring At A Blank WallEvery once in a while, I find myself staring at a blank wall.

It’s just sitting there, giving no indication of direction, no hint of meaning, no hidden answers.  Often even the question isn’t there… or even the beginning of the question.

I solve problems.  I answer questions.  I fix things that are broken.  I see patterns in things, and seeing those patterns allows me to see what needs to be done.  A lot of my sense of who I am, of self, involves those things.

Sometimes, though, there’s just the blank wall to stare at.  There is no pattern to see.

This isn’t just that I haven’t figured out which thing to do next, but truly have no idea even where to look.  It all just looks blank.

I can solve nearly any computer related problem.  I can solve most relationship problems.  I can even figure out how to fix broken toys.  Even when I’m staring at that blank wall, I can solve all of these things for other people.

Sometimes, though, when it comes to me, I find myself staring at a blank wall.

In my own life I don’t always know what to do, or even who to ask or where to look.  It makes me want to look all the harder, but sometimes that is not the answer.

Sometimes you just have to admit the wall is blank… Sometimes you just have to accept that you don’t have the answer.

Sometimes now is a good time to start.

Oh, and if you recognize the feeling that I am talking about, here is one more thing for you… You are not alone.

Personal Development Sites That Stand Out

Personal Development Sites That Stand OutI think that I don’t let people know about other sites that can be really helpful, that I really like, often enough.  Since I mostly write about self development and relationships on A Miracle A Day, I thought I’d share a few self development sites.

* Urban Monk can sometimes go REALLY into depth on things, but he thinks really deeply, so those articles are some of my favorites.  If you’re looking for simpler thoughts, more “how to” than deep looks into things, the other two sites are really good.
Those are the ones that I’m most likely to read.  I’d really like to find a few new gems, though, so if you have any, or want to offer additional support for any of these, feel free to leave a comment.
I read a lot of tech sites, too, since I build web sites… let me know if you’d like a list of a few of my top sites from that side.
I also have another site that is getting close to done, hopefully within the next two weeks, that I will share with you when I think it is done enough to be ready for a few more people to look at it.
Have a great day… and please share any miracles you find!

One Very Simple Trick To Improve Your Mood

One Very Simple Trick To Improve Your MoodHave you ever had one of those days when you simply wake up in a bad mood?

When you wake up in a bad mood, whether the bad is depressed, angry, frustrated, or something else, it seems like it is often very hard to shake.  It can easily last through most of the day, and you even interpret everything that happens that day through the filter of your bad mood.

There is actually a very simple “trick” that clears out the funk much quicker… and it doesn’t really take much.  Anyone can do it, and it’s effective nearly 100% of the time.

There are three components to this very simple solution to improving your mood.

  1. Get Away From “Screens”

Get away from all “screens”, whether it is from your cell phone, your TV, or your computer.  The constant light being emitted makes it very difficult to relax and let go, meaning it’s more difficult to get rid of your bad mood.

  2. Move

The second step is to get up and move your body.  I don’t mean exercise, exactly… just move.  If you’re inside, go outside.  If you’re outside, just move away to another area.

  3. Pay Attention To Your Posture

It’s amazing how much impact your posture has on your mood.  Stand up straight and confident, move like you own the place, and hold your head high.  Put your shoulders back, your chest out, avoid letting your shoulders slump, and keep your hands out of your pockets.

The most important pieces of posture, by far, are having your back straight and having your head up.

It’s very simple, and very quick… combine all three steps, and your mood will improve, often in less than ten minutes, and sometimes in less than five minutes.

Just like your mind can affect your body, in both positive and negative ways, your body can also affect your mind in positive and negative ways.  Bad moods, especially when you start the day that way, tend to cause your mind and body to set up a negative reinforcement cycle… your bad mood causes you to alter your posture, and then your posture reinforces the bad mood, which causes you to keep the negative posture, etc.

Breaking that cycle starves the bad mood, causing it to crumble and fade away.  Simple, right?

Silly Subscription Situation

I don’t really know WHY my subscription service has been having issues lately, but I believe that I have them fixed.  Of course, in the midst of fixing them, I also appear to have temporarily broken direct access to articles (it’s fixed now).  If any of you visit the site and notice that one of the articles appearing on the site has not been received in your subscription, be it email or RSS, please let me know so that I can take immediate action

Here are the three most recent articles, in case you have NOT received them, which I suspect many of you have not:

  • Knowing Your Nature Is The Key To Happiness
  • How To Have Happy Holidays, Without All The Stress
  • Don’t Let Your Body Blind Your Soul
  • Please let me know if you like them, if you’d like more of the same sort or on the same topic, etc., as I’m just getting back into this and I need some feedback.  You can also become a fan on Facebook, or talk to me on Twitter.

And, as always, I appreciate it any time you send others my way, or share my articles via social sites like StumbleUpon, Facebook (both links submit my most popular article of all time :P ), or your site of choice.

A Miracle A Day Coming Back

I am working on bringing the site, and the content, back… they were nearly lost when my server crashed badly.  Stay tuned and I will have them up as I can get to it.

Update – I recovered most, if not all, of my old articles, but it appears the images were lost.  At some point I will go back through and add images so that they look nice, but at least the content is there!

Update 2 – Starting to get some images in to replace the ones that vanished, but I am still trying to find a live person at Google to help me get my subscriber list fixed (it’s not pulling new content right now).

8 Ways To Get Better Sleep

    # Ways To Get Better SleepThere is very little as important to your overall health as getting enough good sleep.  It affects your mental state, your emotional state, your physical health, and pretty much every other aspect of your life.

Note, however, that I didn't just say enough sleep… I said enough good sleep.  Plenty of people get eight hours of sleep each night… some even get ten or more.  A lot of those same people, however, still wake up tired (and stressed!).

The difference between bad, indifferent, and good sleep is huge.  Normal, indifferent sleep is enough to get by, as long as you get plenty.  Bad sleep, on the other hand, can leave you more tired than when you started.

Good sleep can leave you feeling well rested, and just give you a positive feeling all around.  Better quality sleep also means that you need less overall sleep, meaning you can do great with less sleep… sometimes a lot less sleep!

    So, on to the list:

    1. Have A Bed Time

When you set a standard bed time, a time that you go to bed each night, your body starts to adjust, getting ready for bed when it knows that time is coming up.  You'll start to get tired at the same time, you'll fall asleep faster and easier, and your body can adjust all its rhythms to match, meaning it doesn't have to waste time and energy, using them instead for deeper rest and better rejuvenation.

Having a set time that you get up every day is also a good idea, though your body can generally handle different wake up times for set days (ie waking up later on the weekend).

    2. Have A Bed Routine

It also helps to establish a routine for other things, setting up a routine that tells your subconscious and your body that it's time to start shutting down and getting ready for sleep.  Your body and subconscious then work together to tell your conscious mind that it's time to slow down by making you feel sleepy.

That means that you are going to sleep in a natural sort of way, rather than trying to force yourself.  The result is that your body and mind shut down together, rather than fighting each other, making the whole process smoother and easier.

    3. Avoid Having Large Meals Near Bed Time

When you have a large meal near bed time, it means that your body is going to be working on digesting that food while you sleep, keeping it from spending its resources on other things, like healing and rejuvenation.  It also may mean that other processes from the digestion disturb your sleep, like indigestion or even having to get up to go to the bathroom.

A small snack, on the other hand, especially if it's the right kind of snack, can actually aid your sleep and the healing that goes on during it.  One good example is a protein shake containing casein (a protein that comes from milk… not sure if it triggers lactose intolerance or not).  Casein is a protein that breaks down slowly, providing fuel for repairing muscles for much of your sleep.

    4. Avoid Going To Bed Long Before You Go To Sleep

Another relatively common practice that causes inferior sleep is going to bed and doing something other than sleeping, such as reading or watching television.  When you do these things, you're training your subconscious mind to recognize that place (bed) as a place where more input occurs, so that it needs to pay attention.  When you use it only for sleep you are telling your subconscious that bed is a place for rest and relaxation… so when you head there, that's what it immediately starts implementing.

    5. Listen To Your Body

Your body communicates with you all the time, every day… and you'll sleep much better if you listen to it.  If you are itchy before bed, take care of it… the same goes for hunger, feeling dirty, or anything else.  When you take care of such things before bed time, then they aren't constantly taking part of your subconscious mind's attention away from the important business that it generally takes care of during slumber.

    6. Get At Least Moderate Exercise Each Day

You are set up so that it is intended that you get mentally tired and physically tired in proportion… when you work your mind all day without working your body, it throws you out of sync, meaning that one part of you is telling your subconscious that it's time to rest while another part is communicating that it has plenty of energy, and is ready to do more work.  This imbalance causes your subconscious to try to find something in the middle, resulting in too much rest for part of you and not enough for another.

Physical exercise, even when it is just moderate, balances out the equation for the growing proportion of the population that has a job that doesn't require physical exertion.  More exertion brings more physical tiredness (and thus less imbalance), so generally the harder you work, the better you'll feel and sleep.

    7. Get The Right Lighting

Lighting plays a much larger role in your sleep than you might think… if you have the right amount of light (not too little or too much) it can tell your body, and your subconscious, that it is time to go to sleep.  This is especially true if you can find a light that can slowly dim, simulating sunset (here's an example).

The same holds true for waking up, as well… the right amount of light (which, as you may have guessed, is more than for going to sleep) can help you to wake up in a much better way.  Lights that simulate sunrise work even better… and most lights that do one (sunset or sunrise) do the other as well.

    8. Get Up When You Wake Up

One final suggestion, from my own personal experience… I almost always feel better, more rested, and have a better outlook on the day when I roll out of bed as soon as I wake up.  When I lay there, even for a few moments, it makes it causes my body and subconscious to relax back into sleepy mode.  That conflicts with my mind's need to get up and do whatever needs doing that day.

The exception of course, is when you actively do something like, oh, I don't know, snuggling your wife.

You can find all sorts of people who tell you that you need to get your eight hours of sleep, but most of them ignore the quality.  If you get good sleep, you may only need six hours… if you sleep poorly, you may still not feel rested after twelve hours.

The quality of your sleep is much more under your control than most people think… reclaim your rest starting today!

PS – It occurred to me this morning that I should make clear that I've never used the techniques from yesterday's articles… they come from a summarization of many studies I've read, my own observations, and what I've noticed brings my wife and I closer together (or where the lack keeps us from being as close as we could be).  That doesn't mean it's a guess… just that I've never had occasion to do it.

Sometimes When It Rains, It Pours

Another short one… I'll try to put up a longer one later, but I wanted to let all of you who tried to access the site in the last 18 hours or so know what happened:  my server crashed.  I now have it back up and running, but here is what happened yesterday alone:  my vacuum broke, my clothes dryer started burning up, and my server crashed.  On the other hand, I got a good workout in and watched a good movie, Resident Evil:  Extinction.  So I'm actually not stressed (at least now that the server is running again).

I did write an article yesterday, though I'm guessing it didn't go out to subscribers, so here's a link:  Understanding The Conscious Mind's Role In Happiness.  If you like it, give it a thumbs up on StumbleUpon… I could use a good day with a lot of visitors for a little balance.
